Description
Koknese Castle was one of the largest and most significant medieval castles in the territory of Latvia. Construction of the Archbishop of Riga’s stone castle began here in 1209; a massive complex—comprising the main castle, an outer bailey, and the fortified town of Koknese—was erected in a short time. The castle was abandoned after its mighty western towers were blown up in 1701, yet impressive ruins remain to this day. Following the flooding of the Pļaviņas Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir, the water reached the castle’s foundations.
The medieval ruins of Koknese Castle remain one of the most picturesque locations situated between two rivers—the Pērse and the Daugava. The medieval ruins of Koknese Castle host theatrical performances, concerts, coin minting, and ancient Latvian-style wedding ceremonies; the “Waking of the Catfish” festival has also become a cherished tradition.
